Seminole County doles out millions in CARES Act money, still waiting on millions from Florida

SANFORD, Fla. — Seminole County commissioners approved millions of dollars in CARES Act money on Tuesday, but were told that about $8 million more is needed to help those seeking individual assistance.

So far, 11,000 people have registered for the grant money in the county.

$35.4 million in CARES Act money has been allocated, but the county has only received $20.8 million.

$5 million went to the seven cities. Constitutional officers like the sheriff and clerk, also received $5 million.

Nearly $3.2 million went to help the tourism industry, with about half of that going to the Central Florida Zoo, which has been struggling due to the pandemic.

Seminole County Public Schools received the most aid with $8 million.

However, Seminole County Chair Jay Zembower said the county is seeing a huge need with individual rental and utility assistance.

The county closed their portal early because of the overwhelming response.

County leaders are still waiting for the state to release millions of dollars in extra care dollars to help those struggling.
