Pedestrian found dead on Sanford tracks was struck by SunRail train

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Authorities said a person who was found dead along the train tracks in Sanford Friday morning was struck by a SunRail train.

According to investigators, the victim was struck by a train late Thursday night, but the body wasn't discovered until Friday near the Sanford SunRail station.

The conductor driving the Thursday night train said he didn’t know he had hit someone, but authorities looked through surveillance video and determined the victim had indeed been struck by a SunRail train, authorities said.

Video shows the victim standing on the tracks before he was struck about 10 p.m. Thursday, officials said.

Authorities have not released the identity of the victim.

Authorities shut down the track for several hours Friday morning to investigate. Passengers were picked up in Lynx buses and taken to the next stop.

While the transition from SunRail to Lynx went smoothly Friday morning, officials said there is room for improvement if something were to happen again in the future.
