Shark bites New Smyrna Beach surfer

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. — A teen was bitten by a shark while surfing in New Smyrna Beach Sunday afternoon, according to Volusia County Beach Safety.

The 14-year-old, of New Smyrna Beach, was bit on his left leg as he floated on his surfboard at about 4:45 p.m, near the New Smyrna Beach jetty, said VCBS Capt. Andrew Ethridge.

"The surfer was treated for minor lacerations and refused any further care," Ethridge said. "The shark was not seen but the bite pattern was approximately 4 inches in diameter."

The surfer, who wasn't publicly identified, is the tenth person to be bitten by a shark in Volusia County, Ethridge said.
