FHP: Driver runs away from fatal Orlando crash

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla.,None — Florida Highway Patrol troopers are searching for the driver who ran away from a crash that killed an Orlando man early Saturday morning.

Troopers say the crash happened at the intersection of Hiawassee Road and Balboa Drive in Pine Hills around 4:30 a.m.

Witnesses told FHP the driver of a Chevy Camaro ran a red light at the intersection. The Camaro slammed into a Toyota Camry that was traveling northbound on Hiawassee Road, troopers say.

FHP says the impact caused both cars to spin through the intersection and the Camry collided with a brick wall. The passenger of the Camry, identified as 28-year-old Thomas Smith, was killed in the crash. The driver suffered only minor injuries.

The driver of the Chevy Camaro got out and ran away from the scene, leaving his two passengers in the car, according to FHP. Those passengers were identified as 18-year-old Gabrielle Swann and 25-year-old Patrick Chambers. Troopers have not said whether the two are cooperating with investigators.

Troopers say the driver was described as a black male with dreadlocks.
