Two accused in Department of Health ID thefts sentenced

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Family and friends were violent and angry as Channel 9's Karla Ray tried to question Shanterica Smith as she walked out of federal court Monday.

The former Department of Health employee had access to thousands of patient records  and admitted to stealing Social Security numbers as part of a tax fraud scheme.

Investigators said she and Gerrald Williams stole more than 2,000 patient records to file tax returns for more than $3 million.

Investigators said the two were working with a business called One Man at Large Accounting, before it was raided by federal agents.

Williams' brother, Delray Duncan, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for working as a broker between the Department of Health employees and those at the accounting office.

Smith will serve five years in prison while Williams was sentenced to four and a half years.

The group will head to prison in four weeks. Investigators said more arrests are expected.
