Two killed when plane crashes on Merritt Island

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Two people died when the plane they were in crashed in a neighborhood on Merritt Island Monday evening.

The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Paula Avenue near several homes.

"Our units responded on scene and located an aircraft next to a residence, on the east side of the residence," said Lt. Alex Herrera with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

According to officials, both people who were on the plane were killed in the crash.

"It is very fortunate that it didn't cause any more damage than what it did. No one on the ground or in the residence was injured," said Herrera.

Residents in the area watched as the plane crashed into the neighborhood just after sunset.

"It could have hit the house if it came this way but it came straight down into the back yard," said resident Colton Primeaux.

Authorities have not released the identities of the victims. The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate the crash.
