USPS says mail service is faster and more reliable, but inflation remains a challenge

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The head of the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) says the agency has made significant improvements in making sure people are getting their mail on time.

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy testified before a House subcommittee on Wednesday and outlined findings from the second-year progress report since implementing a 10-year strategic plan in 2021.

“We have improved our service, stabilized our workforce, expanded our capacity, started to modernize our nationwide network and just two years into a ten-year plan, we have cut in half our projected financial losses,” said DeJoy.

A progress report from USPS said, “by the end of FY2022, our on-time performance was the highest it had been in five years.”

DeJoy said 98 percent of the population now gets their mail and packages within three days.

But even with significant progress, DeJoy cautioned that inflation remains an ongoing challenge.

The USPS report said inflation has impacted transportation costs, energy expenses and supply chain transitions.

Mail users like Rebecca Bryant from North Carolina said improvements can still be made with the agency.

“We’ve had a couple of bills actually get lost in the mail,” said Bryant.
