VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A second arrest has been made in connection with the 2018 death of a 7-year-old girl, authorities said.
Brandon Williams, 31, was arrested Wednesday on an aggravated manslaughter charge for the death of Kamia Jean-Baptiste.
In February 2020, Janee Dickson of North Carolina was charged in the beating death of Jean-Baptiste in the DeLand area.
Investigators said an autopsy determined Jean-Baptiste suffered hemorrhaging of the soft tissue in her legs, back and backside, which were likely a result of physical abuse.
The cause of death listed in the autopsy report was blunt force trauma, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide, officials said.
“Kamia has never been forgotten here, and the detectives assigned to this case were never going to give up on getting justice for her,” Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a news release. “I don’t know if true justice is even possible in a case where a 7-year-old girl’s whole life was brutally stolen, but we never quit fighting for Kamia, and now that fight will continue through the courts.”
A warrant for Williams’ arrest was obtained Tuesday, the day after Dickson was sentenced to 25 years in prison for her role in her daughter’s death.
“Our 7-year-old victim was tortuously beaten and allowed to suffer for several hours before she was taken to the hospital for treatment – but it was too late to save her,” State Attorney R.J. Larizza said in a news release. “This gut-wrenching crime demands our best efforts to seek accountability and justice.”
