Emergency workers in West Melbourne responded Wednesday to a report of a body seen floating in the water after a car crashed into a pond in the Whispering Winds subdivision.
The crash was reported just after 11:30 a.m. in the 3100 block of Soft Breeze Circle.
Investigators were working to determine why the victim, who was not identified, left the roadway and crashed into the pond.
The car was pulled from the water at around 3:30 p.m.
Residents in the subdivision said sometimes it is hard to see at night when driving in the area.
"(It's) not very well lit in the evenings, so if he didn't know where he was going, he could have just took a wrong turn and ended up in the pond," resident Michelle Paige said.
Investigators said no one reported hearing the crash and they were not sure how long the car had been in the pond before the victim's body was found.
Robin Briggs said she was shocked by the discovery when she saw the man's body floating facedown in the pond Wednesday.
"It is very disturbing," she said. "We have only lived here for four months.
"This is something that you never, you don't think that this would happen in your neighborhood."
