Fla. brewers seek to end ban on beer growlers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Florida craft brewers say their top goal in next spring's legislative session is to finally legalize half-gallon growlers.

But they say they fear that an effort to address several other issues -- including distribution laws -- might make it tougher to end the ban on the 64-ounce refillable beer jugs.

Half-gallon growlers are the industry standard and legal in 47 states, but Florida restricts beer to containers of 32 ounces or less, or to 128 ounces or more. Anything in between is illegal.

Beer distributors say they will support ending the ban on the growlers. But a fight could ensue if the growler issue is part of a larger bill that changes distribution laws.
