Florida’s unemployment rate falls 4 points, returns to single digits for the first time since March

After increasing by almost a full point in July, Florida’s unemployment rate dropped four points in August coming in at 7.4%

From February to April, Florida lost 1,178,100 jobs. However, since May 631,600 jobs have returned, which is more than half.

The falling unemployment rate has not been uniform across the state and across all industries. According to DEO, four of the top five counties with the highest unemployment rates are in central Florida, with Osceola (15.1%) and Orange (11.6%) holing the highest rates in the state and central Florida’s regional unemployment rate at 11%.

" The industry losing the most jobs over the year was leisure and hospitality," wrote DEO in its jobs release, noting that 249,400 jobs had been lost in that sector.
