Polk Co. Sheriff's Deputy Involved In Fatal Crash

HAINES CITY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash that involved a Polk County Sheriff's Deputy.

People who live close to where the crash happened say the intersection is a big problem and that this isn't the first time they have seen a deadly crash there.

Around 10:30 Friday night a Polk County Sheriff's Office K-9 Deputy was driving northbound on Highway 27 in Haines city with is lights and sirens on. For some reason a Jeep driving in the southbound lanes lost control and crashed into the deputy.

The passenger of the Jeep, 63-year-old Moni Kurian was pronounced dead at the scene. 69-year-old Puleekunnil Joseph Kurian, the driver, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Deputy William Schob was also taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. Schob's K-9 partner, Fanthom, was cut on the head and was taken to the vet to get stitches above his right eye.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
