Black Friday 2018: Glance at attractive woman sparked Memphis mall shooting, police report says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One person was shot at a Tennessee mall Thursday night as hundreds of shoppers crowded the complex to begin their Black Friday shopping. Police said the fighting stemmed from a glance at a woman.

The Oak Court Mall in Memphis was open from 6 p.m. Thursday until midnight. The shooting occurred at 11 p.m.

The victim told police he spotted an "attractive woman" at the mall but that he continued walking. He said that once he got outside, he and his cousin started fighting with a man who had been with the woman, WHBQ-TV reported.

According to the police report, the victim was knocked out and he was shot while he was being pulled to his feet. The victim told police he didn't remember getting knocked to the ground and that he didn't hear gunshots.

Matthew Morgan, who watched the fight unfold, said he saw one of the suspects pull out a gun and shoot at the victims during the confrontation. He said he then started shooting. It is not clear whether he returned fire at the suspects or just shot in the air.

Witnesses gave police conflicting reports.

The injured man was grazed by a bullet and is expected to be okay, officials said.

Police arrested Morgan was arrested on a charge of unlawful possession of a weapon.
