12-year-old girl killed, 11 injured after kids in stolen SUV smash into truck in Colorado

AURORA, Colo. — Eight juveniles were crammed into a stolen SUV when it crashed into a pickup carrying two adults, a 3-year-old and a 6-month-old.

The accident happened Saturday evening when a Toyota Tacoma that was turning left into an Aurora residential neighborhood was hit on the passenger side by a stolen Dodge Journey that was traveling at a high speed, according to the The Denver Post.

A 12-year-old girl, who was one of the occupants in the overloaded SUV, died at the scene, police said.

The remaining eleven people were transported to nearby hospitals. The adults in the truck had life-threatening injuries.

The ages of the occupants ranged from 6 months to 31 years:

Toyota Tacoma:

  • 31-year-old male
  • 29-year-old female
  • 3-year-old female
  • 6-month-old female

Dodge Journey:

  • 16-year-old male
  • 16-year-old female
  • 15-year-old male
  • 15-year-old male
  • 15-year-old male
  • 14-year-old female
  • 13-year-old female
  • 12-year-old female (deceased)

Police said that the Dodge Journey, driven by a 15-year-old, had been reported stolen earlier that day.

The driver is in custody for an outstanding warrant, Aurora Police said. Investigators believe that he may have been impaired at the time of the accident.
