15-year-old boy identified as student killed outside Pittsburgh school

PITTSBURGH — Authorities on Thursday identified the 15-year-old boy killed one day earlier in a shooting outside Pittsburgh’s Oliver Citywide Academy, according to WPXI.

Officials with the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the teenager as Marquis Campbell, WPXI reported. He died after being shot in the chest while sitting inside a school transport van outside school on Wednesday afternoon.

Interim Pittsburgh Public Schools superintendent Wayne Walters said Wednesday that Marquis was well-liked by students and school staff members, according to WPXI.

“Today was nothing short of a tragedy,” he said. “I stand with the leaders of the school. As a former principal, I know (that) just the possibility of an incident like (what happened) today is something that keeps us up at night.”

Two people suspected of firing shots into the school transport van Wednesday remained at large Thursday. Police continue to investigate.

Oliver Citywide Academy is a special education center serving students in grades three through 12, according to Pittsburgh Public Schools. As of Oct. 1, about 105 students were enrolled at the school, mostly in grades eight through 12, officials said.
