Officers with the New York City Police Department were called to The Urban Assembly School of Law and Justice in Brooklyn at about 11:50 a.m. EST, WPIX reported.

A school secretary saw the weapon and told the school’s dean, who alerted school safety agents, WABC reported. The student was restrained and taken into custody, according to the television station.

The weapon and bullets were recovered from the student’s backpack, WABC reported. The teen also had about $30,000 cash in his bag, according to the television station.

Charges against the student are pending, police said.

“Dangerous items of any kind have absolutely no place in our schools, and our outstanding school staff and School Safety Agents immediately and safely recovered this item shortly after the student entered the school building, ensuring that all students and staff are safe,” the New York City Department of Education said in a news release. “All protocols were followed, and we are working closely with NYPD regarding follow-up actions.”
