State Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, who represents the city in the state legislature, confirmed to The New York Times that one officer was shot in the neck and the other officer was shot in the leg by a gunmen firing a long gun.

Caputo also confirmed to the newspaper that the shooting occurred in Newark’s South Ward and that both officers had been transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Sources familiar with the investigation confirmed to WNBC that the suspect, who remained at-large late Tuesday afternoon, fled to the top of a nearby building after firing the shots.

According to the TV station, the wounded officers had been serving a warrant at a home near Van Velsor Place and Chancellor Avenue when gunfire rained down from above.

“We don’t know what the end result is going to be,” Caputo told the Times, adding, “It’s traumatic. In this day and age you never know when something like this is going to happen.”

Officials with the Newark Police Department did not immediately identify the wounded officers, and a motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted that he was “aware of and closely monitoring an unfolding situation in Newark.”

“I am in touch with local authorities and the State is providing resources as requested. We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe,” Murphy added.

Law enforcement sources confirmed to WNBC that no threat to the community remained by 3 p.m. EDT.
