The horse, now named Darien, was found after animal control officers received a call about a stray horse, the Animal Care & Control Team of Philadelphia said in a Facebook post. In the post, officers said the horse had been abandoned by the person who bought him earlier that day.

Photos accompanying the Facebook post show the horse standing on the sidewalk. The horse appears so thin that its ribs are visible.

Officials told WTXF that the horse was underweight and did not have horseshoes to protect its hooves from the street.

The horse had been out on the street for about three hours before animal control came, Andy Garcia, a neighbor, told WPVI.

“I guess the neighborhood just took care of him,” Garcia told the station.

ACCT acknowledged neighbors who helped the horse in their Facebook post, saying the community “kept him cool and safe until we were able to load him on our trailer and get him off the busy street.”

The horse was named Darien after the street on which he was found, WPVI reported.

The ACCT told KYW-TV that it would not be placing Darien up for adoption, because he needs additional medical rehabilitation.

Officials told WPVI that while it is legal to own a horse in the city, it’s difficult to have one without a lot of grass and green space available.
