Barbie is releasing a Jane Goodall doll made from recycled plastic

Barbie announced on Tuesday that they are releasing a doll inspired by Dr. Jane Goodall made from recycled ocean-bound plastic.

In a news release from Mattel, Barbie announced their partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute for the Dr. Jane Goodall Inspiring Women Doll and 2022 Barbie Career of the Year Eco-Leadership Team. The doll is certified CarbonNeutral and it is made from ocean-bound plastic.

Mattel said that the Inspiring Women Series is made up of women who “took risks, changed rule and paved the way for future generations to dream bigger than ever before.” The Jane Goodall doll joins Ida B. Wells, Dr. Maya Angelou, Billie Jean King, Eleanor Roosevelt and many more. The 2022 Barbie Career of the Year Eco-Leadership Team doll set is designed to encourage sustainability and help protect the planet, Mattel said.

“We are proud to unveil our first sustainable Barbie Inspiring Women and Career of the Year Eco-Leadership team dolls, which further demonstrate our shared commitment to creating a more sustainable future,” said Lisa McKnight, Executive Vice President and Global Head of Barbie and Dolls, Mattel, in a news release. “Kids need more role models like Dr. Jane Goodall, because imagining they can be anything is just the beginning – seeing it makes all the difference. We hope that this collection and homage to a groundbreaking pioneer for women in science and conservation inspires kids to learn more about green careers, how they can protect the planet, and act out sustainable stories through doll play.”

According to CBS News, Goodall started her pioneering career in 1960 at the age of 26. She studied chimpanzees in Tanzania, partly because of her love for animals. She has received many awards and honorary degrees for her work over the years as a conservationist. Goodall has even been made commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, according to CBS News.

According to Mattel, Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute which conducts research and she became a UN Messenger of Peace, and is a renowned humanitarian, scientist and activist. World Chimpanzee Day is on July 14 which makes this release from Mattel even more appropriate for the Jane Goodall doll.

“My entire career, I’ve wanted to help inspire kids to be curious and explore the world around them – just like I did when I first traveled to Tanzania 62 years ago. I’m thrilled to partner with Barbie and encourage young children to learn from their environment and feel a sense that they can make a difference,” said Dr. Jane Goodall, in a news release. “Through this partnership, I hope to inspire the next generation of eco-leaders to join me in protecting our planet and remind them they can be anything, anywhere – on the field, in the lab, and at the table.”

The Jane Goodall dolls are now available at stores across the country, according to Mattel.
