Beer free in Dublin when machines malfunction during Nebraska-Northwestern football game

DUBLIN — Who would have thought football fans would be singing about the luck of the Irish at a Nebraska-Northwestern game?

The two Big Ten college football teams had some happy fans in Ireland to watch their season opener on Saturday, and the score at Aviva Stadium in Dublin had nothing to do with euphoria. The lack of a Wi-Fi connection meant that fans were treated to free beer and free food, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

“The tills are down and we can’t take cash,” an Aviva Stadium concession worker told the newspaper.

The tills -- the small credit card machines -- did not have a connection during the first half, prompting officials to offer concessions for free.

That led to the day’s best rush -- not on the field, but by fans swarming to the concession stands for the free food and drink.

And the lines were long. What a way to kick off the college football season.

The beer flowed, and fans were able to take as much as they could carry, the World-Herald reported. Most fans took four beers, although one man managed to grab seven brews.

It is the first college football game played in Dublin since 2016, according to Bleacher Report. Games scheduled in Ireland in 2020 and 2021 were canceled due to COVID-19.

An estimated 13,000 Americans made the trip to see the two schools play, according to Bleacher Report.

Northwestern edged Nebraska, 31-28.
