Chiefs will cover medical expenses of girl hurt in crash involving Britt Reid

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have reached a settlement with the family of a 5-year-old girl who was injured in a crash involving former assistant coach Britt Reid during Super Bowl week.

In a statement Friday from the team’s legal representative and the family’s attorney, Tom Porto, the Chiefs will provide medical care and financial assistance for Ariel Young, KMBC reported.

“Ariel’s recovery is a long road,” the statement said. “But she has made great strides and continues to improve every day. Earlier this fall, she attended her first day of school.”

Young was in one of two cars struck by Reid, the son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, The Kansas City Star reported. Britt Reid struck the vehicles on the side of an entrance ramp along Interstate 435, near the team’s practice facility, the newspaper reported.

The three-car crash on Feb. 4 occurred three days before the Chiefs met the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Florida.

Young sustained a brain injury that consisted of swelling and bleeding, the Star reported. The crash left her hospitalized in critical condition and she was in a coma for 11 days, the newspaper reported. She was released from a hospital on April 2.

Prosecutors charged Britt Reid with driving while intoxicated. The team placed him on administrative leave and allowed his contract to expire, which ended his employment with the team, KMBC reported.

The crash occurred after a Chevrolet Impala ran out of gas on an I-435 ramp near the stadium. Court documents allege that Young’s mother, Felicia Miller, arrived in a Chevrolet Traverse to help her cousin, the Star reported.

Reid, driving on the same ramp, struck the Impala then the Traverse with his Dodge Ram Laramie pickup, WDAF reported.

Court records allege Young’s mother, Felicia Miller, had arrived to help her cousin whose Impala had run out of gas and stalled. Miller said she got back into the driver’s seat of her Traverse and looked in the rearview mirror when she saw the headlights of an approaching vehicle.

Police said Britt Reid was driving about 84 mph shortly before the collisions and had a blood alcohol level of 0.113 about two hours after the crash, the Star reported. The legal limit in Missouri s 0.08.

Britt Reid pleaded not guilty to driving while intoxicated in June. His trial date is set for April 18, 2022, according to KSHB.

Britt Reid was hired as Kansas City’s quality control coach in 2013 when his father was hired by the Chiefs. He was promoted to assistant linebacker coach in 2019, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
