In a news release, Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy announced her office had charged Debra White with second-degree child abuse and failure to stop at a scene resulting in death. Worthy said White failed to activate the bus’s stop sign and lights to allow the victim to cross the street safely.

Zyiar Harris, who had autism, was hit by a car after he got off the bus driven by White, and died several days later.

“Seeing my son laying there, with blood coming out his mouth, and his body twisted, how would any mother feel about that,” Zyiar’s mother, Casandra Jones, told WJBK.

Jones told WJBK the bus driver pulled across the street without the sign and lights, and as soon as her son got off the bus, he was hit by a car speeding by. Police told the station the driver stopped at the scene.

In her statement, Worthy noted that the charges against White were filed before Harris died, and said that the case will be reviewed again when her office gets reports from the medical examiner’s office.
