Do it yourself: Ben & Jerry’s shares edible cookie dough recipe

If there is a silver lining to staying at home during the coronavirus pandemic, it is that more people are heading to the kitchen to bake and create their own recipes.

Ben & Jerry’s is making it easier for people to whip up a delicious, delightful dessert. The Vermont-based dessert company shared the recipe for its edible chocolate chip cookie dough on social media and on YouTube. It’s the same recipe used for Ben & Jerry’s frozen dough balls that can be found in the company’s popular ice cream products, People reported.

As the step-by-step instructions indicate, making the dough from scratch is simple and a fun activity to do at home. It only takes 15 minutes and requires only seven ingredients, the magazine reported.

Plus, the cookie dough is safe to eat raw since the recipe does not require eggs, Ben & Jerry’s said. The flour is heat-treated to destroy contaminants like E. coli and salmonella. There are two ways to heat-treat the flour, according to Ben & Jerry’s. On method is to microwave the flour on high until it reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit throughout. The best way to confirm that is to use an instant-read thermometer. The other way is to heat the flour in a conventional oven.

The seven ingredients are flour (one cup), brown sugar (one cup), unsalted butter (eight tablespoons), salt (one-half teaspoon), heavy cream (two tablespoons), vanilla extract (one teaspoon) and chocolate chips (one-half cup).

Have fun.
