Bowyer, 43, was involved in a crash at about 9 p.m. CDT on June 5 near Osage Beach, Missouri, that killed Mary Jane Simmons, 47, of Camdenton, Missouri, WDAF-TV reported.

The accident occurred after Bowyer, a NASCAR analyst for Fox Sports, finished broadcasting for the NASCAR Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway outside St. Louis, according to the television station.

Bowyer was driving westbound on U.S. 54 when he struck Simmons, who was walking on a ramp, CBS Sports reported.

According to a police report, Bowyer stopped his vehicle and called for help, Racing News reported.

Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene, WDAF reported.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of this tragedy,” Fox Sports said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.”

Bowyer’s vehicle reportedly sustained heavy front driver side damage and major damage to its windshield in front of the driver seat, according to WDAF.

The crash report states Bowyer showed zero signs of impairment and provided a roadside sample of .000 blood alcohol content.

According to police, a crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine was found near Simmons’ belongings.

Bowyer released a statement through his racing company.

“Anyone that knows me, knows that family is everything to me. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones of Ms. Simmons,” Clint Bowyer Racing said in a statement. “This is a very difficult time for my family and I. Please respect our privacy as we move forward.”

Bowyer raced in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2005 to 2020. He has competed for Richard Childress Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, HScott Motorsports and Stewart-Haas Racing for four years. He won the 2008 Nationwide Series championship while driving for Richard Childress Racing.
