Joshua Thomas Taylor had been driving on Interstate 65 North in Nashville when his child threw a favorite toy out of the vehicle’s window, Nashville police said in a news release.

Police said Taylor returned to the area where the toy had been thrown several hours later, parking his car and walking on the interstate.

A state emergency vehicle happened to see Taylor and tried to talk to him, but Taylor then ran across the interstate and jumped over a barrier to the other side, WKRN reported.

Nashville police said as the driver of the emergency vehicle immediately tried to navigate to the opposite side of the highway, an SUV hit Taylor, killing him.

The driver stayed at the scene, and officers said they showed no signs of impairment. Speed did not appear to be a factor, WKRN reported.

According to a fundraiser set up for the family, Taylor was father to Brenna, 13, and Noble, 2, as well as a baby boy expected later this year, The Today Show reported.

Nashville police remind drivers that “it is illegal and inherently dangerous to walk on the interstate.”
