Staff members from Big Dog Ranch Rescue loaded up a bus and drove 1,200 miles to rescue dogs and puppies from three shelters in Dallas and Houston that lost power and did not have any more water and food to care for the animals, WPBF reported.

“You could see the leaking, flooding everywhere, the water pipes burst, it was really a rescue situation,” Evan Fried, who helped transport the dogs, told WPBF. “They were running out of basic common needs. They weren’t prepared for this at all.”

The group also brought donated items including blankets, food, water and medical supplies.

Many of the dogs are sick and will be quarantined for two weeks as they recover and then will be available for adoption, the shelter said.

“All healthy dogs will be added to our website on March 8,” the shelter said on social media. “Until then, we are not able to show the dogs or share their images.”

The rescue group said it plans to make more trips to Texas.

“How can you not help?” Lauree Simmons, president of the rescue group, told WPBF. “How can you not go help when you have the ability to, I feel Texas would do the same for us.”
