Sanders, whose father is former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, announced the news in a video posted to social media.

“America is great because we are free, but today, our freedom and the rule of law are under attack,” Sanders, 38, says in the video. “I was the first White House press secretary to require Secret Service protection because of a credible, violent threat against me. We’ve seen violence in our streets, at a congressional baseball practice and at our Capitol. This is not who we are as Americans. To remain free, we must have law and order and resolve our differences peacefully.”

The confirmation came just hours after The Associated Press, citing an unnamed campaign official, reported that Sanders intended to announce her candidacy in the 2022 gubernatorial race.

According to the AP, Sanders, who served as White House press secretary from 2017 to 2019, joins two other Republicans who have already announced they are vying for the post – Arkansas Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin and Attorney General Leslie Rutledge. Current Gov. Asa Hutchinson, also a Republican, can’t run again because of term limits, the news agency reported. So far, no Democratic candidates have joined the race.
