CONRATH, Wis. — A Wisconsin firefighter was injured after a loaded gun discharged because of the heat from a blaze, investigators said.
The Cornell Area Fire Department said Justin Fredrickson, 35, was working a fire a week ago when the gun went off.
“The bullet traveled through an exterior wall, striking Fredrickson in the abdomen,” Chief Dennis Klass said. “The loaded firearm discharged due to heat conditions caused by the fire, not by the intentional actions of a person.”
Fredrickson, a 16-year veteran of the agency, was taken to a hospital and later airlifted to another medical center for treatment. He was released Friday from an intensive care unit.
He has had three surgeries and “was able to get some walking in (Friday),” agency officials said on social media.
