‘Here we go again’: Icy conditions, fast drivers cause 17-car pileup in Nevada

RENO, Nev. — Icy road conditions and excessive speed in Nevada caused a 17-car pileup early Tuesday, causing one person to suffer serious injuries, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred on U.S. 395 at about 3 a.m. local time in the northern outskirts of Reno and caused a traffic shutdown for four hours. A Nevada Highway Patrol vehicle was one of the vehicles struck, but the trooper was not inside his vehicle and was not injured, the Reno Gazette-Journal reported.

The NHP released a video of multiple vehicles crashing into one another, with troopers yelling “Watch out!” to passing motorists.

“Here we go again,” one trooper can be heard on the video, as a vehicle skids on the ice and crashes into another car.

One person was taken to an area hospital with severe injuries and others were treated for minor injuries, KTVN reported.

Tuesday’s pileup comes after another 17-car wreck a few days ago on Interstate 80 near Sparks, the Gazette-Journal reported.

“There’s a common theme in weather-related crashes and it comes down to your speed,” NHP spokesperson Hannah DeGoey told the newspaper. “If there’s inclement weather or slick road conditions, you absolutely need to slow down and give yourself plenty of following distance and time to react.”

DeGoey added that the posted speed limit on highways is for dry pavement conditions and that traveling at highway speeds with ice or snow is not recommended.
