Man beaten, robbed of $200K life savings in parking lot attack at California bank

HUNTINGTON PARK, Calif. — A man was brutally attacked and robbed of his six-figure life savings July 30 in the parking lot of a southern California bank, police said.

According to authorities, Francisco Cornejo had just withdrawn $200,000 from a Chase bank in Huntington Park when an unknown assailant snatched his satchel and fled, KTLA reported.

Video taken by a bystander showed Cornejo fall to the ground as a result of the attack, but the suspect’s face is not visible in the recording, the TV station reported.

“(Cornejo) was parked as closely as possible to the bank, knowing he was going to withdraw a large amount of cash. As soon as he got to his car, before he was able to get to his car, he was grabbed and beaten,” Nathan Soleimani, an attorney representing Cornejo told KGO-TV.

“He was literally fighting for his life savings,” Soleimani said, attributing the sizable withdrawal to the recent sale of Cornejo’s home.

“And when he was being beaten, he was doing his best to try and retain the bag that he brought with him,” he added.

Cornejo was left with significant bruises on his side and arm, and his shoulder was dislocated, KTLA reported.

Soleimani said investigators are looking into surveillance video from the bank that shows the suspect, clad in a black hoodie, fleeing the scene and Cornejo on the ground, KGO-TV reported.
