NJ woman survives scary ride through city drainage system during flood

Dashing through a drainage system underground was not what a DoorDash driver had in mind Monday afternoon.

A New Jersey woman endured a mile-long ride under the city of Passaic during a flash flood, surviving after being “shot out” into the Passaic River, NorthJersey.com reported.

Nathalia Bruno, 24, of Newark, was delivering food in Passaic on Monday and apparently was unaware of the rising waters caused by a powerful storm in New Jersey. Bruno’s car began to fill up with water and floated toward a large viaduct opening, Passaic Fire Chief Patrick Trentacost told the website.

Bruno managed to exit her vehicle, but the current pulled her and the car into the brook that runs beneath the city.

“(The) water is traveling at 30 mph,” Trentacost told NorthJersey.com. “When it floods, it floods.”

A woman in Rutherford saw Bruno emerge from the water around 5:20 p.m. and called an ambulance, WNBC reported.

Rutherford Police Chief John Russo said Bruno was “shot out” of the viaduct, swam to the other side of the river and climbed onto a backyard, NorthJersey.com reported.

“She was stunned,” Russo told the website. “She was out of it. In shock. She really didn’t know what happened to her.”

Door Dash confirmed that Bruno is a contractor.

In a statement, DoorDash said it was offering Bruno financial assistance for any expenses incurred in what the company described as a “frightening incident,” WNBC reported.

“At DoorDash, we take the safety of our community extremely seriously, and our thoughts and sincerest condolences are with the Dasher who endured this frightening event,” the statement said. “We have reached out to offer our support during her recovery and will be providing her with financial assistance as well as occupational accident insurance to cover expenses incurred.”
