Noisy candy wrapper leads to fatal fight between roommates, Washington police say

KENT, Wash. — A Washington state man is accused of killing his roommate after the crinkling of a candy bar wrapper led to a fight between the two men, authorities said.

Phillip Alan Frazier, 58, of Kent, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Danny L. Jones on May 12, according to King County online court documents. Frazier’s bail has been set at $4 million, according to KIRO-TV.

Police in Kent responded to a 911 call of a domestic assault at about 11:49 p.m. PDT, the television station reported.

Frazier had been released from prison nearly two weeks before the alleged assault and was sharing a room with Jones at a halfway house, police said.

According to court records, Jones typically went to bed early and became annoyed after he was awoken by the noises made by Frazier with a candy wrapper, KIRO reported. The two men began arguing, according to the television station.

Frazier said when Jones confronted him, he struck his roommate in the face “multiple times” with his first, according to charging documents. Frazier added that he “could feel his fist crushing” into Jones, according to court documents.

Jones was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after medical responders arrived, police said. Frazier was treated for a broken wrist.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Jones’ cause of death as blunt force trauma to his head and neck.

Court documents stated that Frazier stands 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 290 pounds, KIRO reported. Jones was reportedly 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighed 135 pounds, according to the television station.

Frazier has a 2020 domestic violence felony violation, a 2018 felony conviction for violating a domestic violence order and convictions in Tennessee and California, KIRO reported.
