Nurse delivers baby in parking garage

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A baby will come into the world at its own pace. Sometimes the baby is born after the due date. Sometimes they come early.

For one woman, the baby came before she could get inside a hospital, but luckily a nurse was within earshot of the woman and the woman’s husband and knew just what to do.

Mason Fritter said she woke up very early St. Patrick’s Day morning when her water broke around 1:30 a.m.

The couple spent about eight hours at home as labor progressed, but eventually headed to the hospital at UC Davis in Sacramento, California, KOVR reported.

But as soon as they parked the car, Fritter told her husband that the baby wasn’t going to wait any longer.

People started to gather as Jenna Ricks was in the garage bringing her week-old son to the hospital for treatment.

Ricks said, “And then I hear ‘I need a shoelace.’ And, I was like there is only one thing that you would need a shoelace for in the medical world,” Ricks told KOVR.

Ricks happens to be a labor and delivery nurse at another hospital.

Another nurse who was already helping was thankful for Ricks’ being there.

“It was a celestial moment, like it was something meant to be. She needed me to make sure she didn’t bleed out or hemorrhage, or just needed me to be there to feel safe and be healthy,” Ricks told KOVR.

The baby was born and the newborn’s parents waited with their new son for paramedics to arrive.

The child, who was born about two weeks early, got the name Maverick. He was healthy and weighed 8 pounds, 2 ounces, KTXL reported.

The two families became quick friends and are planning to schedule playtime with their sons once the coronavirus pandemic comes to an end.
