Aisha Nieves knew when she saw the pit bull-rottweiler mix listed on the Lehigh County Humane Society as “Ash” that it was her beloved Kovu, WFMZ reported.

Nieves lost Kovu in 2019 after a driver crashed through her fence, leaving an opening for the dog to escape. He was eventually rescued and taken to the Lehigh County Humane Society where he underwent treatment for fleas and inflammation for four months before he was ready to be adopted.

Nieves had searched for Kovu during that time, but he had already been adopted by another family by the time she had checked at the animal shelter.

“I showed them a picture, and they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s Ash. He was just adopted not that long ago,’” she told WFMZ.

The family had Kovu for nearly two years until they recently had to give him back because they were facing eviction, CNN reported. That’s how his face ended up in an ad for adoptable pets that Nieves happened to see.

She went to the shelter June 18 to make sure it was her dog.

“After submitting proof of ownership to LCHS the woman came to visit the dog and it was apparent to all that when they reunited Ash was, in fact, Kovu, her beloved pet from years before,” Julie Huber, with the Lehigh County Humane Society, told CNN.

“Their reunion was undeniable and heartwarming to all who were there,” Huber said. “The way that Kovu reacted and remembered (his) owner when he saw her made the reunion all the more memorable. It was a moment that gave you all the loving chills.”

Kovu remembered Nieves the moment he saw her.

“We locked eyes and I seen his smile and he started wagging his tail,” she said. “Soon as he started coming, he started squealing and screaming and yelling and jumping on me kissing. I love him so much, like I’m just so happy he’s back.”
