Recall alert: Alabama-based Pop’s Que and Stew recalling frozen Brunswick stew

An Alabama company is recalling more than 12,000 pounds of its frozen stew products because they were produced without a federal inspection, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday.

In a news release, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said that Pop’s Que and Stew, of Opelika, is recalling approximately 12,472 pounds of its Brunswick stew products made between May 2020 and May 2022.

The items were shipped to retail outlets in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, the FSIS statement said.

The problem was discovered during routine FSIS surveillance, the agency said. It was determined that the Brunswick stew products did not have the USDA mark of inspection and were produced in an establishment not inspected by USDA.

The recalled items are:

• 30-ounce tubs containing “Pop’s Homemade Brunswick Stew” with sell-by dates through Nov. 30, 2022.
• 59-ounce zippered plastic bags containing the Pop’s Que and Stew Brunswick stew product, with no other identifying company or product information on the label.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumers eating these products, the FSIS said.
