Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively donate $200K to NAACP Legal Defense Fund

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are doing their part to help combat police brutality.

The couple announced on Instagram that they have donated $200,000 to the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund, People magazine reported.

“We’ve never had to worry about preparing our kids for different rules of law or what might happen if we’re pulled over in the car,” they wrote in their post, which was posted to both of their accounts.

“We don’t know what it’s like to experience that life day in and day out. We can’t imagine feeling that kind of fear and anger. We’re ashamed that in the past we’ve allowed ourselves to be uninformed about how deeply rooted systemic racism is.”

The “Green Lantern” co-stars, who have three children, also said they would begin voting for candidates with platforms that were in alignment with those ideals, E!Online reported.

“We want to know the positions of school board nominees, sheriffs, mayors, councilpersons.,” the couple said. "We want to know their positions on justice. But mainly, we want to use our privilege and platform to be an ally. And to play a part in easing pain for so many who feel as though this grand experiment is failing them.”

The actors’ statement comes as protests over police violence continue nationally. They were sparked by the death last week of George Floyd, a black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer held his knee on the man’s neck for more than eight minutes.
