QUEENS, N.Y. — A fire that killed an 8-year-old girl when it swept through a multifamily home in Queens on Saturday morning was sparked by an electric scooter’s faulty lithium-ion battery, according to officials with the New York City Fire Department.

The blaze ignited just after 7:30 a.m. on the top floor of the three-story brick row house in the College Point neighborhood, WABC-TV reported.
Firefighters found Stephanie Villa Torres, 8, unconscious and unresponsive at the scene, and she was pronounced dead at an area hospital, WNYW reported.
Firefighters gained control of the blaze just after 8:15 a.m., and fire marshals determined that the fire was accidental, WABC reported.
According to WNYW, the child’s father and brother were treated for burns and smoke inhalation but are expected to survive. The injured men were 35 and 18, respectively, WABC reported.
