According to the Chicago Police Department, a backhoe was stolen from a construction site on the city’s South Side and driven 20 miles to a Chase bank, WLS-TV reported. The backhoe was then used to destroy an ATM at the bank, located in the Rogers Park neighborhood of the city, the television station reported.

Surveillance video from a nearby liquor store showed a car pull up to the strip mall where the bank was located at around 1 a.m. CST, with the backhoe following closely behind, WBBM-TV reported.

The thieves then used the backhoe’s jackhammer to smash open the ATM, the television station reported. It is unclear how much money was taken.

“When I came and I saw it I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is crazy,’” Marshall Jenkins, who manages a nearby laundromat, Sudz Laundry, told WLS.

The backhoe was left in a parking lot, the television station reported.

”I basically just came a couple of hours ago to do a withdrawal and I was just surprised when I looked and saw that the ATM looked like somebody tried to take it or break in,” Julius Mercer, an ATM customer, told WLS.

“This is crazy. This is insane. What is wrong with us?” area resident Gina Stewart told WBBM. “This is what we’re doing now? This is what we’ve resorted to? This is absolutely insane.”

There is no one in custody and police are investigating the case, WLS reported.
