Trump campaign adviser Corey Lewandowski tests positive for COVID-19

Corey Lewandowski, a senior adviser for President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign, tested positive Wednesday for COVID-19.

Lewandowski said he believes he might have contracted the viral infection while spending the last several days in Philadelphia, The New York Times reported. He told The Associated Press that he’s not been experiencing any symptoms.

Lewandowski recently traveled to Pennsylvania to assist Trump’s efforts to contest the state’s election results. He appeared with Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani at an event last Saturday outside a landscaping company and lobbed unfounded accusations of voter fraud as the race was called for Trump’s challenger, now-President-elect Joe Biden.

Lewandowski attended a celebration at the White House on election night, Bloomberg News reported. Several other people who attended the event, including White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson, have since tested positive for COVID-19.

Unidentified aides previously told PBS News that they were concerned the party might become a so-called “superspreader” event as the coronavirus pandemic continues worldwide.

Lewandowski’s diagnosis comes after Trump and first lady Melania Trump announced early last month that they had tested positive for COVID-19. The president was hospitalized for three days at Walter Reed Medical Center and later released. Several other officials who attended a White House celebration in September for the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court also tested positive for the viral infection and recovered.

The U.S. continues to lead the world with the most number of coronavirus cases of any nation and the highest number of deaths. As of Thursday, more than 10.4 million people nationwide have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and over 241,000 people have died, according to numbers compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

Globally, more than 52.3 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported, causing over 1.2 million deaths.
