SANTA ROSA, Calif. — A UPS driver rescued an 86-year-old woman he found bleeding in the street and delivered her to a hospital in the middle of his routes.
Madga Vahey said she started walking faster when she saw a car approaching and fell and broke her wrist while crossing the street last month near Providence Santa Rosa Hospital, KTVU reported.
UPS driver Devon Brooks saw Vahey bleeding in the street and ran over to help. Vahey told him she was in intense pain and could not walk. So, Brooks carried her to the hospital and stayed with her until she was admitted.
“Absolutely he’s a hero,” Vahey said. “He saved me from what could have been a horrible calamity.”
Brooks also went back and picked up her purse and other personal items that had scattered across the street.
“When they put my purse on the gurney, I realized Devon had tucked my sweater inside,” Vahey told KTVU. “His actions were extremely thoughtful and special.”
UPS found out about Brooks’ heroic deed after Vahey wrote them, thanking him for his actions.
Brooks said he thought he did the right thing.
“I don’t feel like a hero, I just feel like I did what anyone should do,” Brooks said.
