Nykeria Clark told WSVN that she and her Yorkshire terrier noticed the raccoon in some trees as they were out for a walk. She told the news station that they tried to run from it, but the raccoon chased them.

Video shared online showed Jojo and the raccoon fighting at the home’s front door after Clark high-tailed it inside. The raccoon then sprinted after them.

“I was basically in like a panic mode, so at that point, I tried to find whatever I could find,” Clark told WSVN. “I got a mop, and I tried to scare it off with a mop, and then once I scared it off with a mop, it hid in the blinds.”

Clark said she called animal services, who arrived after more than an hour and took the raccoon away. She told WSVN that Jojo wasn’t bitten by the raccoon, but that she took him to get a rabies shot that day as a precaution. In a later update on TikTok, she said lab results determined that the raccoon did not have rabies.

In a video posted on Friday, Clark said that she thought she’d figured out why the raccoon had been so aggressive to her and her dog: the wild animal appeared to have been protecting her babies.

According to The Humane Society of the United States, it’s very rare for racoons to chase after people. The society recommends that anyone who makes contact with a wild animal such as a raccoon seek help from their animal control agency and health department.
