Woman, child hit by car while waiting at bus stop

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A woman and a 9-year-old were hit by a car while waiting at a bus stop in Orange County Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The crash happened on Sand Lake Road shortly after 4 p.m.

Troopers said 24-year-old Yelitza Ortiz turned onto Sand Lake Road from Sand Lake Point Place directly in front of an oncoming vehicle. The oncoming vehicle tried to stop but crashed into Ortiz's car and then hit the pedestrians, who were waiting at a bus stop.

The pedestrians were identified as 27-year-old Belinda Hernandez and 9-year-old Armando Avila. Hernandez is in critical condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center, while Avila was listed in a serious condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital. There were two other children standing with Hernandez at the bus stop, but they weren't injured.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Ortiz was cited with failure to yield the right of way.
