Oviedo beats Bartow for 7A hoops title

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — R.J. June had 19 points to lead Oviedo to a 55-52 victory over Bartow in the Florida Class 7A boys state basketball championship game Saturday.

Oviedo (28-4) never trailed but never led by more than nine points in a game that came down to the final possessions.

Leading 48-47, the Lions came out with a big defensive stand, stripping Bartow center Tony Bradley and scoring on the other end with a layup from Matt Milon.

Bartow (21-11) trailed 54-51 when Derrick Brooks was fouled with 3.1 seconds remaining and launched a 3-pointer after the whistle. The shot was good but the officials waved off the basket.

Brooks hit the front end of the bonus and Bartow had a chance for the rebound but the ball touched the Yellow Jackets last.

Milon hit the front end of the bonus with 1.3 seconds remaining and although Bartow rebounded the back end of the one-and-one, the desperation 3-pointer fell short.

Qua Harper added 12 points for Oviedo. Bradley had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Bartow while Brooks added 10 points and eight assists.
