Pembroke Pines Flanagan wins Class 8A football title

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Kalyn Nelson threw two touchdown passes to Jahcour Pearson in the second quarter and Pembroke Pines Flanagan went on to a 26-7 victory over Osceola in the Florida Class 8A football championship game Saturday night.

Flanagan (12-2) clinched its first state championship with a dominant defensive effort, holding Osceola to 211 total yards and only one pass completion.

Nelson completed 16 of 27 passes for 201 yards, including seven completions to Pearson.

The Falcons tacked on two touchdowns in the final two minutes, one on Faion Hicks' 21-yard run and the other on a 27-yard interception return by Stanford Samuels.

Osceola scored first on a 45-run by sophomore Malcolm Davidson on a third-and-31 play late in the first quarter.

Flanagan tied it on Nelson's 36-yard TD pass to Pearson early in the second quarter.

The Falcons regained possession on their 7 with three minutes left in the first half and Nelson conducted a 93-yard scoring drive, connecting with Pearson on a 22-yard TD pass with 22 seconds left.

Osceola (13-2) extended a 15-play drive with Braxton Jones' 17-yard run on a fake punt in the third quarter, but the Kowboys did not get any points out of it. It was their only advance into Flanagan territory in the second half.

It was the second straight loss in a state championship game for Osceola, which lost to Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas in last year's Class 7A final.
