Woman killed, man injured when vehicle crashes into water-filled ditch along I-95

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A 42-year-old woman from Palm Bay was killed and a 39-year-old man, also from Palm Bay, was critically injured Friday morning when the vehicle in which they were traveling crashed into a ditch filled with water along Interstate 95 near Rockledge, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash was reported at about 8 a.m. along the northbound lanes of I-95 near South Fiske and Barnes boulevards, Sgt. Kim Montes said.

Troopers said the driver lost control of the vehicle for some unknown reason and left the road.

A Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer witnessed the crash and rescued one of the people from the vehicle, Montes said.

"One occupant was able to get out on his own and the driver was extricated out by first responders," Montes said.

Ingrid Thompson, a passenger in the vehicle, was taken Wuestoff Medical Center, where she died. The man was flown to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. Another passenger in the vehicle was not seriously hurt, troopers said.

The man's identity has not been released.

Two northbound lanes of I-95 remain closed as troopers investigate the crash.
