COVID-19, controlled burns today to prevent uncontrolled fires later

ORLANDO, Fla. — The lack of rain is becoming an issue for Central Florida. Much of the state, including Central Florida is now under an abnormal drought and this could worsen are we go deeper into the dry season and there is no relief in sight. There are also very warm temperatures that do not seem to want to give up on the state. These are key ingredients for wildfires to develop.

Florida’s wildfire season goes year-round, but it peaks during the late spring and early summer. As we move closer to these dates, the Florida Forest Service’s priority is to prevent future wildfires from getting out of control. Therefore, they focus in controlled burns.

Certified meteorologist George Waldenberger spoke to the Florida Forest Service and ask how the Coronavirus pandemic could affect the mitigation of wildfires. Watch his report above.
