Tropical Storm Gonzalo still expected to become a hurricane before reaching the Caribbean

ORLANDO, Fla. — Tropical Storm Gonzalo as the system has become stronger, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. It is located over 1,000 miles east of Grenada, in the extreme southern portion of the Windward Islands.

Gonzalo is expected to continue tracking to the west at about 12 to 15 mph, which will place it near Grenada by Saturday afternoon. Gonzalo is compact and it is forecast to strengthen to a hurricane before it reaches the Caribbean. Usually, the conditions over the southern Caribbean are very hostile to sustain a tropical system. It will stay well south of Puerto Rico.
