9 Investigates pricey oil changes for Orlando police cruisers

ORLANDO, Fla. — 9 Investigates learned that the Orlando Police Department spends five times as much on oil changes than the Orange County Sheriff’s Office does.

The city of Orlando services its fleet of police cars, firetrucks and garbage trucks at its own garage.

The police department pays an average of $110 each time a cruiser’s oil is changed, an amount comparable to an oil change on a luxury car.

The city’s 550 marked patrol cars receive oil changes every 3,000 to 4,000 miles.

The Sheriff’s Office, which has twice as many vehicles in its fleet, said it has a contract with Jiffy Lube in which each oil change costs $20.

The city said the cost includes a full inspection of the car, including brakes and tires.

The city said it has no plans to outsource vehicle maintenance.
