Seminole County students dropped off at wrong stops in bus mix-up

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — The first day of school for much of Central Florida is in the books, but it came with some issues in Seminole County.

Two parents said their children were dropped off at a stop five miles from their home, and Channel 9 found out another student got off at the wrong stop.

Seminole County officials said Thursday that they are working to make sure the mix up doesn't happen again.

"I couldn't imagine if their grandparents were not there," said Seminole County parent Ashley Trancygier.

An emotional Sanford mother and father said their 8-and-6-year-old unexpectedly showed up at their grandparents home.

"There was an oversight. Very tragic. It could've been worse. Thank God it wasn't,” said Jason Jeffers.

He and his wife said their 6-year-old told school leaders at Wicklow Elementary School in Sanford a heads up about the issue, but she was kept on the bus.

“All they had to do was call. Call us or call grandparents,” said Trancygier.

Channel 9 learned a Kindergarten student from Pine Crest Elementary in Sanford was dropped off at the wrong bus stop with his cousin.

"Our transportation department is working pretty much 24-7 fixing those issues," said Seminole County School District spokesperson Michael Lawrence.

Lawrence said it's not unusual to have a few incidents involving students on the wrong bus or bring dropped off at the wrong stop on the first day of school.

“Our school staff is always trying to make sure they're checking students' home addresses and bus routes to make sure that's ironed out,” Lawrence said.

The spokesperson also told Channel 9 it is normal protocol for several school leaders to meet inside headquarters every evening during the first week of classes to make sure every student is accounted for and fix any issues.
