1 killed, 1 injured by flying tire from passing car

A north Florida man died and another was seriously injured when a tire flew off a passing car and hit them.

Williston police say Patrick Woodard was driving north on U.S. 41 on Monday when the left front tire broke off and bounced along the highway. It hit part of a driveway and went into the air, clearing a metal fence around an auto body shop.

The spinning tire hit 33-year-old Ivan Sandquist, killing him instantly. It also struck 45-year-old James Fender, who was taken to a Gainesville hospital.

The Gainesville Sun reports the men had been working on an air compressor.
